Cherokee track squads both finish fourth in Lakes Conference Meet

SPENCER — With the state track qualifying meets just seven days away, the Cherokee girls and boys track teams competed in the Lakes Conference Meet hosted by the Spencer Tigers.

The Cherokee girls earned two first place finishes in running events with the 4×400 Meter Relay (Kalexis Hyndman, Sabrina Valentin, Megan Courtright, Harper Benson) posting a 4:23.96 winning time. The Braves’ 4×800 Relay foursome (Hyndman, Grace Woodall, Benson, Courtright) crossed the finish line in a winning 10:26.08 clocking.

Cherokee finished 11 points better than Estherville-Lincoln Central for fourth place, finishing with a total of 71 team points. Champion in the varsity girls division was Spirit Lake with a team total of 118.

The Spirit Lake boys squad completed the sweep of the team titles, amassing 139.5 points, Cherokee finished in fourth place with a team score of 79.

Like the Cherokee girls, the boys also earned a pair of first place finishes. However, both of those came in field events with sophomore Blake Lovell throwing the Spot Put 48-7.50, and senior Jon Jenness clearing the High Jump bar at 6-02.

Next for the Cherokee teams in the Class 2A state qualifying meet on Thursday at 4 PM hosted by Manson-NW Webster. Other schools set to compete there are: East Sac County, Forest City, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, Greene County, Hinton, KP/WC/RV (Kingsley-Pierson/Woodbury Central/River Valley), Lawton-Bronson, Ogden, Ridge View, South Central Calhoun and the host Cougars of Manson-NW Webster.
