Top Ranked Westerners Flood Ridge View With Runs, Raptors fall 13-2

AKRON — Class 1A top-ranked Akron-Westfield baseball team returned to Sargent Field for the first time since the flooding on Wednesday against Ridge View.

The guest Raptors were deadlocked in a 2-2 tie through four innings. An inning later, Ridge View trailed 3-2. Then the flood gates opened on Ridge View with the host Westerners pushing 10 runs across in the six ending the game with the Raptors only posting two outs in the inning.

Ridge View’s six inning 13-2 loss to Akron-Westfield snaps a in-season three game win streak by the Raptors. The Westerners have won three straight games against Ridge View going back to May 29, 2021.

Myrtue did not factor in the decision. He was one of four pitchers to throw in the game. Suffering the loss was Conner Jacobsen who worked 3.2 innings facing 16 batters. GRANVILLE — With the Riverview Complex in LeMars having experienced damage from the flooding and unable to be played on, South O’Brien and LeMars Gehlen matched up on Wednesday in a War Eagle Conference tilt in the Jays home away from home — Vosberg Field.

For three innings it was relatively quiet offensively with only one run scored by each team. The 1-1 deadlock changed abruptly for South O’Brien in the bottom half of the fourth inning with Gehlen plating five Jays runs for the 6-1 lead.

The game remained that way until the bottom of the sixth inning when the host Jays scored seven runs to win 13-3 in the run-rule affair. Gehlen sweeps the regular season series having won 15-6 in the first meeting on June 5.

The loss is the 20th consecutive to Gehlen for South O’Brien. The Wolverines have not experienced the thrill of victory against the Jays since May 29, 2012, a 7-3 win in LeMars.

South O’Brien booted the ball around to the tune of five defensive errors. Wolverines’ pitching served up nine walks. Alex Griebel started on the bump for South O’Brien and was charged with the loss. Griebel in five innings of work faced 24 batters saw nine Jays runs score (five earned). Griebel struggled to find the strike zone as he walked five, hit five Jays, and posted only two strikeouts. Gabe Moermond and Trevor Fiddelke each worked in relief for the Wolverines.

In 12 of the Wolverines 22 games, South O’Brien pitching has allowed double-digit runs by their opponent. In those games the Wolverines have one only one game.

South O’Brien finished with only 19 at-bats against Gehlen picking up for hits. That is a .211 batting average, slightly above their season average just over .200 in 22 games played.

Mitchell Enger, Moermond, Fiddelke, and Willie Conley each had a single for South O’Brien in the loss. Ben Woodall and Moermond each had an RBI. Jaden Kreber, Woodall and Conley accounted for the three Wolverines runs.

Gehlen started Braden Bollin pitched into the fifth inning without recording an out. He had faced 19 batters. All three Wolverines runs were earned. Bollin walked four and struck out five, getting credit for the win. Dylan Poeckes was credited with two innings in relief.

The Jays’ Gabe Wiltgen reached base safely three times, as he hit a single and double and was hit by a pitch in the game. Wiltgen also led Gehlen with a game-high four RBI. Owen Seivers scored three of Gehlen’s runs. Jake Bogern and Alex Peters each scored a pair of Gehlen runs.

South O’Brien’s record dives to 5-17 overall. Gehlen inches closer to .500 at 12-13 overall. South O’Brien will travel on Saturday to Lake Park for its first round Class 1A tournament game against Harris-Lake Park (10-11). First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM.
