Wolverines Lose WEC Heartbreaker in Seventh to Gehlen

GRANVILLE — In a low scoring War Eagle Conference softball matchup on Wednesday, South O’Brien fell to one game under .500 for the season at 10-11 with a 2-1 loss to LeMars Gehlen.

The Wolverines mustered only two hits off winning pitcher Kennedy Paulsen, a Gehlen freshman. Paulsen walked one, struck out four, and gave up South O’Brien singles to Jinger Nieuwenhuis and Lindsey Einck.

Nieuwenhuis was credited with the RBI that scored Abby Nelson in the top half of the first inning.

LeMars Gehlen scored a run in the third to tie the game at 1-1.

Larissa Pohlen finished 2-for-4 and having scored a Jays runs. Emerson Schmidt scored the other Gehlen run. Izzy Lammers and Neveah Hodgson each were credited with a RBI. Gehlen improves its record to 13-9 under Tony Kerkvliet.

Losing pitcher was Brooklyn Edwards. She was credited with 6.2 innings pitching having faced 27 batters. Both Gehlen runs were earned. Edwards walked three and struck out two.

Ridge View lasses corral Westerners, Shepherd belts fifth home run of season

AKRON — The Ridge View softball team on the same day Akron-Westfield fell out of the Class 1A state softball rankings, won its fifth straight game on the season with a non-conference 6-3 victory over the host Westerners.

It marked only the second meeting between the two schools since July 3, 2005, when Akron-Westfield in Akron took care of Ridge View 10-5.

The marquee read Shepherd belts fifth home run of season, as in Raptors senior and Simpson College bound Tatum Shepherd, who also finished with three RBI and run scored in the Raptors victory on Wednesday.

Morgan Wright drove in a pair of Raptors runs. Reese Hawthorne double, had an RBI, scored two Raptors runs and stole a base. “Speedy” Cora Tesch also had two runs scored for Ridge View.

Ridge View scored three runs in the third, and two runs in the fifth inning, to take a 5-2 lead. Each team scored a run in the seventh inning. Akron-Westfield had cut the deficit to 3-2 after three innings of play.

Shepherd also handled the duties in the pitcher’s circle, finishing with 103 pitching thrown to 24 batters over 6.2 innings in picking up the win. Only two of the three Westerners runs were earned. Shepherd was a bit wild at times as she walked three, hit four Akron-Westfield batters, but did manage for strike out seven. Zoey Aschinger had 0.1 innings of relief posting a strikeout against the one batter she faced.

Emma Rolfes was charged with the pitching loss for Akron-Westfield. MaKayla McCully had 1.2 innings in relief. The Westerners see their overall record fall to 20-6. MacKenzie Hughes finished 2-for-2 at the dish with two runs scored for the Westerners. Boe Harris had two RBI and Peyton Vander Helm doubled and scored a Westerners run.

Ridge View improves its overall record to 18-11.
